After World War II, German Nazi Klaus Barbie hid in Bolivia under the name Klaus Altmann. By the 1970s his past was suspected but was difficult to prove. He agreed to a televised interview to proclaim his innocence. The interview was conducted in German, supposedly the only language he knew, except the reporter slid in one question in French, which Barbie answered easily. While this helped identify him, Barbie wouldn’t be extradited until 1983 because of his political connections.
