By the end of World War II, Japan was desperate for oil and so began making airplane fuel from the roots of pine trees. By Japan’s calculations, 200 pine roots could keep a plane in the air for one hour. Large swaths of forest were felled for the project, but the resulting fuel gummed up the engines.
