Ulysses S. Grant was the last U.S. president to have ever owned a slave. Though born in the free state of Ohio, Grant married the daughter of a slave-owning farmer and benefited from slave labor. Grant’s father-in-law gave him an enslaved person in the late 1850s. Grant freed him in 1859.
