In 1985 two Lebanese men hijacked a commercial passenger jet. The plane needed fuel, but the ground crew refused to provide any without upfront payment, even when the hijackers threatened to kill the hostages on the plane. Flight attendant Uli Derickson offered her Shell credit card, which was charged about $5,500 for 6,000 gallons of jet fuel. She was later awarded the Silver Cross for Valor by the veterans group Legion of Valor.
