In 2014 Val Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer, which required a tracheotomy and left him with a raspy voice. He continued to act until his last film, Top Gun: Maverick, in 2022. By that time, Kilmer was unable to speak, and his voice was digitally altered for the few words his character, Iceman, speaks in the film. In 2025 he died of pneumonia at age 65.
