The Kirtland’s warbler was removed from the endangered species list in 2019 after recovery efforts increased the population to between 4,500 and 5,000 adult birds by 2016. Efforts included creating the Kirtland’s Warbler Management Area in Michigan, which allowed controlled burns to encourage jack pine growth, population control of brown-headed cowbirds, and restricting public access to nesting sites during breeding season.
