The temple is a classic example of southern Indian temple architecture. It is constructed from thousands of tons of granite and features a towering vimana, a large statue of Nandi (Shiva’s bull), entry gopurams, antechambers, murals, and Tamil inscriptions. The 80-ton octagonal kumbam (cupola) atop the vimana was said to have been placed there by means of a gently sloping ramp some 4 miles (6 km) long.
