The six branches of the U.S. military are:

The Army is the oldest (1775) and biggest service. It provides ground forces. The Marine Corps is a component of the Navy. It specializes in amphibious landings and also has ground units. The Navy handles maritime military activities, while the Air Force is responsible for air warfare and air defense. The Space Force, the newest service (2019), handles space-related military operations. The Coast Guard enforces maritime laws. It is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security, except during times of war. Then the Coast Guard functions as part of the Navy and is under the direction of the president.
