No, it wasn’t Mickey Mouse. Instead, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was Disney Company’s first animated character. In 1927 Disney began its first series of fully animated films, and they featured this rabbit, which Walt Disney chose because, he thought, there were already too many cartoon cats. Oswald survived for a time, but a clash with a distributor resulted in Disney losing control of the character entirely. From that wreckage emerged a new character named Mortimer Mouse. Lillian Disney didn’t like the name and told her husband to change it. He did. Mickey Mouse had arrived.
