Joan Didion was an American novelist and essayist known for her lucid prose style and incisive depictions of social unrest and psychological fragmentation. She was a prominent voice of New Journalism. Early in her career she focused on her California upbringing, her personal experiences, and the impact of 1960s counterculture. Her later nonfiction addressed U.S. politics and foreign policy.
