Rerum novarum (Latin: “Of New Things”) is an encyclical issued by Pope Leo XIII in 1891. It addressed the social and economic problems caused by the Industrial Revolution and essentially laid the foundation for modern Roman Catholic social teaching. The encyclical rejects socialism as a solution to the exploitation of human labor and highlights workers’ rights.
