Solemn vows are meant to be more permanent and durable, whereas simple vows may be perpetual or temporary. Also, solemn vows are made publicly and must receive recognition from the Roman Catholic Church (usually represented by a superior of a religious order). Simple vows can be private or public, but they have not received official recognition from the church.
