Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed declared a state of emergency on June 25, 1975, across India, on the advice of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The Emergency gave the government sweeping powers and curtailed civil liberties. Ahmed supported the Emergency and endorsed controversial amendments to the Constitution of India introduced by the government.
