The Union of Utrecht, concluded on January 23, 1579, was an agreement forming a “closer union” within the larger union of the Low Countries to resist Spanish rule. It laid the foundation for a separate state in the northern Netherlands, known as the United Provinces of the Netherlands or the Dutch Republic.
