Although the war started in August 1965, tensions had begun earlier in the year. From January to June skirmishes broke out in the Rann of Kachchh in Gujarat state, where Pakistani troops probed India’s defenses. On August 5 Pakistani troops infiltrated Indian-administered Kashmir, and on September 1 the Pakistani military launched a major offensive. The Indian military began its offensive on September 6. The war ended on September 22 after the United Nations brokered a ceasefire.
