Poker originated in North America and evolved from earlier games like primero, brag, and poque. It was adapted to the modern 52-card deck by 1834, and most of the innovations came in the decade 1861–70, probably because of the great amount of poker played by soldiers on both sides in the American Civil War. Poker later spread globally, aided by the American Expeditionary Force during World War I.
