Asian elephants have been listed as an endangered species since 1986 due to poaching (which mainly targets males for the ivory in their tusks), collisions with trains, habitat loss, and human-elephant conflict (which stems largely from elephants damaging crops in agricultural areas). It is notable that an estimated one third of the global population are used as work animals for jobs such as logging.
