Alvin Birdi is a former economist and has held lecturing posts at the University of Manchester and the University of Middlesex. He is completing a DPhil on Samuel Beckett and J.M. Coetzee at the University of Sussex. His work appears in Encyclopaedia Britannica as part of a joint publishing agreement with the publisher of 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die, where the work originally appeared.
