  • The largest concentration of wreckage debris was found in farmlands and a built-up area just southwest of the village of Hrabove, Ukraine, in separatist-held territory.
  • While 196 of the passengers were Dutch, 42 were Malaysian and 27 were Australian.
  • The 283 passengers on board represented at least 10 nationalities, including 193 Netherlanders, notably scientist Joep Lange.
  • Video evidence surfaced that purported to show rebels combing through the still-smoking wreckage, seemingly dismayed at finding a civilian aircraft.
  • In May 2018 the Netherlands and Australia declared Russia legally responsible for what happened to the plane.
  • The Russian government contends that the plane was shot down by a Ukrainian fighter jet or a Ukrainian missile or that there was no missile involved at all.
  • The researchers concluded that the crash was caused by the detonation of a warhead from a radar-guided missile fired from a Buk surface-to-air system.
  • According to prosecutors, the missile used belonged to the 53rd Anti-Aircraft Brigade, an active-duty unit of the Russian military.
