There are about 200 million European rabbits in Australia. Nearly all of them can be traced to a handful of rabbits introduced to the continent in 1859 by English settler Thomas Austin, who hosted rabbit hunting parties on his estate. It’s estimated that the rabbits cause about $200 million of agricultural damage annually.
