When the Mexican-American War began, Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna was a deposed Mexican president in Cuba. He contacted U.S. Pres. James Polk and said that if he were reinstalled as leader, he would make peace with the U.S. Polk arranged for Santa Anna’s return to Mexico, after which Santa Anna promptly took charge of the army and began fighting U.S. forces.
