In 1304 Scottish forces fighting the English had holed up in Stirling Castle. King Edward I laid siege to it. Frustrated that the siege was taking too long, he eventually began building a 300-foot-tall trebuchet, the largest in history. The Scottish forces saw the massive catapult-like device being built and tried to surrender. Edward would not accept the surrender until the weapon was completed and used.
