Maryborough, city, central Victoria, Australia. It lies along the Pyrenees Highway and is connected by rail to Melbourne (southeast). Located on the northern slopes of the Eastern Highlands and originating (1839) as a sheep run known as Simson’s or Charlotte Plains, the town was founded in 1854 during a gold rush. It was renamed after the Irish birthplace of the local police commissioner and was proclaimed a municipality in 1857. It was declared a city in 1961. Maryborough is the market for a district of grain farming and livestock raising and is also a lumbering and manufacturing centre with printing and publishing, food processing, clothing, metal working, and leather industries. Pop. (2001) urban centre, 7,471; (2011) gazetted locality, 7,630.
