elephantiasis, condition associated with the infectious diseases known collectively as filariasis. Elephantiasis results from a blockage of the lymphatic system, causing lymph fluid to accumulate in affected areas. This process results in the enlargement of certain body areas, typically the limbs and external genitals. Skin in affected areas may thicken and harden.
