Saraikela

Saraikela, town, northern Jharkhand state, northeastern India. It lies on the Kharkai River about 20 miles (32 km) southwest of Jamshedpur.

Saraikela was the capital of a former princely state that was founded by Bikram Singh of the Porahat Raj family in the 17th century. It was a sanad (patent, or grant) state of the Chota Nagpur Commission and was incorporated into Bihar state in 1948. It subsequently became part of Jharkhand when that state was created from the southern portion of Bihar in 2000.

The town is a road junction and agricultural trade centre located on an undulating plain with copper, iron ore, asbestos, and limestone deposits. Pop. (2001) 12,270; (2011) 14,252.
