turnbuckle
turnbuckle, mechanical device that connects the threaded ends of two rods and permits them to be adjusted for length or tension. The turnbuckle has two collinear holes, one of which has right-hand threads and the other left-hand threads that mate with the right- and left-hand threads on the ends of the rods. Rotation in one direction draws the rod ends together, while rotation in the opposite direction separates them.
