The pope is elected by a procedure known as a conclave, in which cardinal electors gather in seclusion in Vatican City to vote. This event occurs when a pope dies or resigns. The succeeding pope is chosen from among the cardinals, who must be under age 80 to vote. When a two-thirds majority is reached among the electors, the newly elected pope chooses his papal name.
