Zilphia Horton, a civil rights activist, heard “We Will Overcome” at a protest in Charleston, South Carolina, and then introduced it to Pete Seeger. Seeger and others at Highlander Folk School added new instrumentation and rhythm. Seeger is credited with changing will to shall, although Septima Poinsette Clark made the same alteration.
