The pope is chosen by the cardinal electors in a voting process during the papal conclave. This event occurs after a pope dies or resigns. The succeeding pope is usually chosen from among the cardinals, who must be under age 80 to vote. When a two-thirds majority is reached among the electors, the newly elected pope chooses his papal name.
