Bartholomew I met numerous times with Pope John Paul II and in 2013 he became the first Eastern Orthodox patriarch since at least the Schism of 1054 to attend the installation of a new Roman pope when he attended that of Pope Francis. He has been active in building dialogue with Jewish communities and was the first patriarch of the Eastern Orthodox Church to speak out against the evil of the Holocaust. He has also made numerous attempts to build bridges with Muslim communities.
