Zavaritzki caldera is on Simushir Island, a Russian-owned island in the Kuril Island chain. (The Kuril Islands separate the Pacific Ocean from the Sea of Okhotsk.) The volcano’s three nested calderas, along with several smaller lava domes and cinder cones, sit near the center of the elongated island. Together, these calderas form Biryuzovoe Lake.
