About the turn of the 20th century many employers demanded domestic staff and waiters be clean-shaven. Ostensibly, this was done for hygienic reasons, but many felt that the facial hair ban was meant to demean those of lower social status. In 1907 French waiters went on strike for, among other things, the right to grow a mustache.
