Secretariat raced for 16 months. He began competing in July 1972 and lost his first event, the Aqueduct. However, soon after Secretariat began dominating horse racing. In 1973 he captured the Triple Crown after winning the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes. On October 28, 1973, Secretariat participated in his last race, winning the Canadian International Championship Stakes. Over the course of his career, Secretariat competed in 21 races, winning 16.
