The varroa mite (Varroa destructor), a parasitic mite, is a serious pest of the western honeybee (Apis mellifera). It is thought to be a major factor in colony collapse disorder (CCD) and poses a significant threat to wild and managed honeybee populations worldwide. If a honeybee colony is left untreated, a varroa mite infestation will typically kill it within three years.
