The varroa mite is indigenous to Asia, where it was originally a parasite on eastern honeybees (Apis cerana). Since the mid-20th century, however, the pest has expanded its range nearly worldwide with the spread of domesticated western honeybees (Apis mellifera). It is considered an invasive species in Europe, North America, Australia, and other areas outside its original range.
