Steven Spielberg takes relatively little to no upfront money for directing movies, instead requiring a share of the film’s profits. If one of his movies does poorly, he doesn’t get paid. Spielberg often requires the stars of his movies to make a similar deal, once saying, “I want them to gamble along with me.”
